REFLECTION
2021
50in x 35in
Oil on canvas

This painting draws inspiration from the novel The Vegetarian by Han Kang, an acclaimed recipient of the 2016 Man Booker International Prize. “Reflection” explores the concept of dreams as a powerful expression of unconscious desires, which may have been suppressed in the conscious realm but find active release in the realm of dreams. Such unconscious desires, whether they are joyous or unsettling, persist and accumulate rather than fade away when ignored. I have symbolically represented the stacking of desires using a black plastic bag which is usually used for containing trash in my country as a metaphor. Therefore, the bag becomes a vessel for containing these suppressed desires. Still, its fragile nature illustrates how even the slightest trigger can cause the desires to explode or leak, revealing their intensity and impact on the psyche.
