LOVE! PEACE! DOVE! (and queer)
2025
oil on canvas, wood

We have always been here
Pigeons are often seen as symbols of peace, love, and freedom, yet the pigeons we pass by every day are generally regarded as dirty, untouchable, and unwelcome. These negative perceptions resonate with how queerness is often perceived in Korea.
This series of painting was created to dismantle objectifying, flat stereotypes and to resist queer erasure. I gathered my queer friends — myself included — and painted them as they are, to record and make visible our existence. I hope this work can offer empathy and courage to some, and a chance for understanding to others.
