The work “dislike” started with the simple thought of trying to describe some features of sign language onto canvas. As I watched videos which showed various sign languages, the expression “dislike” was most noticeable with its big hand gestures and head movement. While painting this piece with the chosen expression, it made me reflect on my own choice of this as the main subject. I realized that my approach toward this painting was rash as I did not have an attachment to sign language before, moreover, I have never tried to learn sign language either. Without understanding such a different communication mechanism, I encountered limitations to fully understand and thereby describe it with art. I couldn’t help but add a textual layer on the surface which is my familiar and mostly used communication method, written language.
