Visual Nostalgia

oil on wood

I define home as a place of psychological comfort, not just where I sleep. For me, home exists only in memory—it's a nostalgic place from my past that I long to return to. Since moving here, I've often heard phrases like, "I want to go home," followed by, "Isn't here your home?" and "How dare you call this home?"

The image of lying on a wooden floor after school on a warm early summer day represents home for me. I wanted to express that kind of longing—not just for myself but in a way others could relate to. To do this, I focused on friends born between 2004 and 2006 who spent their school years in Korea. I chose five everyday sounds familiar to this group, played them, and asked which sound felt most connected to home for them. Then, I had them draw the image that sound evoked. I found similar images online and used them as references, layering oil paint over a wood panel until I created a single image. It may not resonate with everyone, but I hope at least one person can feel longing and comfort when they see it.
